Dorje Drak Monastery
Dorje Drak Monastery is one of the most important historic Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the Lhoka region Tibet. It’s a major monastery of the Nyingma school — the oldest of Tibetan Buddhism’s four main traditions — and holds deep religious, cultural, and historical significance.
Dorje Drak is considered one of the Six Mother Monasteries of the Nyingma tradition — a core lineage within Tibetan Buddhism known especially for its terma (revealed treasure texts) and tantric teachings. The monastery traces its origins to the discovery and transmission of the Northern Treasure (Jangter) teachings by early masters like Rigdzin Godemchen and his successors.
The monastery is located at on the northern bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River, at the foothills of a mountain with a naturally auspicious vajra (dorje) pattern — which gives the monastery its name. It’s reachable by road from Lhasa or Samye, typically less than 50 km west of Samye Monastery and about 18 km east of the main road to the regional airport.
