Shalu Monastery (Shigatse)

Shalu Monastery is one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Tibet, located about 20 km southeast of Shigatse, in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

·       Tibetan name: ཞ་ལུ་དགོན་པ་ (Zha-lu Gonpa)

·       Founded: 1040 AD

·       Founder: Chetsun Sherab Jungnay

·       Altitude: ~3,900 meters

·       School: Originally Kadam; later became closely associated with the Sakya tradition

·       Shalu was a major center of Buddhist scholarship, translation, and art

·       It played an important role in the development of Tibetan academic and monastic education

·       Unique blend of Tibetan, Han Chinese, and Nepalese architectural styles

·       Famous for its exceptionally well-preserved murals from the 11th–14th centuries

·       The murals depict Buddhist teachings, mandalas, historical figures, and daily life scenes
