Tibet Travel | Mount Kailash | Parikrama

Mount Kailash is a sacred peak located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Standing at 6,638 meters (21,778 feet), it is part of the Trans Himalaya range. Despite its relatively moderate height compared to other Himalayan giants, Mount Kailash is considered one of the most mystical and revered mountains in the world.

Religious and Spiritual Significance

Mount Kailash holds immense importance in multiple religions:

  • Hinduism: It is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati, where Shiva meditates in a state of eternal bliss.
  • Buddhism: Associated with Chakrasamvara Tantra, it is considered a sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Jainism: Referred to as Ashtapada, it is where the first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva, attained moksha (liberation).
  • Bön (Tibetan Indigenous Religion): Considered the centre of spiritual power and a legendary axis mundi.

Kailash Parikrama (Circumambulation)

A pilgrimage known as Kailash Kora (Parikrama) is performed around the mountain, covering about 52 km (32 miles). Devotees believe that completing the circuit on foot cleanses past sins and leads to spiritual enlightenment. Some extreme devotees even perform it by prostrating at every step, taking weeks to complete.

Nearby Attractions

  • Lake Manasarovar: A sacred freshwater lake at 4,590 meters, believed to be created by Lord Brahma.
  • Lake Rakshastal: A nearby saltwater lake, often associated with negative energies in mythology.
  • Dirapuk and Zutulpuk Monasteries: Located along the pilgrimage route.

Climbing Restrictions

Mount Kailash has never been officially summited. Even though it is technically climbable, it is forbidden due to its religious significance. In 1926, a British expedition led by Hugh Ruttledge attempted but later abandoned their climb. Reinhold Messner, one of the greatest mountaineers, was also denied permission.

Best Time to Visit

  • May to September: Ideal months with moderate weather.
  • Kailash Yatra: Organized yearly for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims, with routes via Nepal, India, and Tibet.
